Logistic integrations / ESB

Logistics companies are increasingly realizing the potential of connecting suppliers, carriers, cloud providers, etc., especially when using SaaS. A cloud-based integration platform is the ideal way for transport and logistics to easily realize and manage these connections by means of APIs in order to provide fast and controlled access to data or services of an organization. In general, the use of an integration platform leads to a combination of the following advantages:

  • Additional income through expansion of existing channels
  • Wider reach
  • Facilitating innovation (new apps and services)
  • Improving operational efficiency
  • Lower IT costs

APIs
API stands for application programming interface. An API is a collection of definitions that allow a computer program to communicate with another program or component.

APIs enable freight forwarders and 3PLs to link directly to (logistics) online services, giving them quick and easy access to information, proof of delivery and up-to-date rate information.

Using APIs, freight forwarders and 3PLs can query multiple carriers to determine the most cost-effective routing options in real-time. This is much more efficient than checking each site manually.

APIs enable quick and easy mobile integration, meaning application data and reports can be easily pushed to mobile devices when needed.

APIs can enable automated invoicing between carriers, shippers and 3PL partners, reducing errors and ensuring timely payments.

APIs are useful when old technology is involved. Networks and web applications built over many years do not lend themselves easily to 3rd party integration, especially when it comes to mobile apps. APIs provide an abstraction layer that can mediate between different existing networks, both internally and externally.

APIs provide new flexibility. For example, SaaS software may not have the interface needed for a particular business case, but with the API it can be built quickly and easily.

ESB (enterprise service bus)
An integration platform is a non-coding framework that allows you to quickly and easily build and manage connections in a visual way. A modern integration platform can develop both direct connections and APIs.

A point-to-point connection is a direct connection between two systems. In an ESB connection, each application is connected to the ESB. The ESB then takes care of transformation, orchestration and routing of each message to other applications.

One of our Grensloos project partners offers an integration platform, which is applicable for integration with logistics partners and customers by means of an API management system. Contact Grensloos and we will organize a demonstration.
